Mumkin’s Beard Origins A Founders Insight

Starting to grow a beard from 18

I started growing a beard at the age of 18, after spending my teenage years experimenting with an untidy moustache. My beard journey began like this: I wanted to feel more mature and thought a beard would do the trick.

 

At the same time, I was focusing on personal development, hitting the gym and bulking up from 67kg to 92kg. But as much as physical growth mattered, I quickly realized that this wasn't enough. There was more to self-improvement—especially when it came to how I presented myself.

 

However, growing a beard came with its own set of problems. My beard was curly, unruly, and untidy. Some of my colleagues even joked that I looked like a caveman. With male grooming products still being a niche market, I wasn’t familiar with many brands. In desperation, I tried using a splash of coconut oil on my beard here and there. But I wasn’t consistent, and deep down, I knew it wasn’t a long-term solution.

 

I needed something I didnt know I needed - The Beard Oil

Fast forward a few years into my 20s, and I had just gotten married. That’s when I received my first beard grooming kit. It had all the essentials—beard wash, oil, balm, and a comb. I was hopeful, but unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. I began to doubt whether beard grooming products could actually tame my wild beard, or if I was doomed to deal with a messy look forever.

 

At the time, I was working as a production manager at a startup manufacturing site, which was where I got real insight into the world of cosmetics. I learned the ins and outs of how serums and oils are made for hair and skin—the technical details, the safety checks, the quality standards, and everything in between. It was ironic: here I was, leading teams in a company that produced health and beauty products, and yet, I still struggled with my own beard.

Through my work, I also gained hands-on experience working with raw materials and blending recipes to create finished products. This knowledge, combined with my Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, gave me the confidence to create something better. I set out to develop the best beard oil products in the world—and that’s how Mumkin was born.
